Royal Mail has announced important changes to its Universal Service delivery model that will affect how Second Class letters are delivered across the UK. These changes have been approved by Ofcom and will be introduced gradually over the coming months.

What Is Changing?

Under the new delivery model:

Second Class letters will now be delivered on alternate weekdays (Monday to Friday) rather than every weekday.
First Class letters will continue to be delivered six days a week (Monday to Saturday) as they are today.
Royal Mail will roll out these changes in phases across its nationwide delivery network over the next 5–6 months, covering approximately 1,200 delivery offices.

What Does This Mean for Your Business?

If your business regularly sends or receives Second Class mail, you may notice slightly longer delivery times once the changes are implemented in your area.

To help minimise any disruption, we recommend:

• Allowing additional time for Second Class mail to arrive.
• Using First Class services for urgent or time-sensitive correspondence.
• Planning mail campaigns with the revised delivery schedule in mind.

For most businesses, these changes can be managed with a small adjustment to mailing schedules, but organisations that rely heavily on postal communications should review their processes ahead of the rollout.

Why Are These Changes Being Introduced?

Royal Mail has introduced these changes following updated regulations from Ofcom. The revised Universal Service model is designed to reflect changing customer demand while maintaining reliable postal services across the UK.
